Maryland AIRS is a regional affiliate (chapter) of the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems, the only professional association dedicated to the field of information and referral.
Information and Referral (I&R) is the art, science, and practice of bringing people and services together. When people have questions or need help to find critical services such as financial assistance, food, shelter, child care, jobs, or mental health support, they turn to the members of Maryland AIRS to receive information on community, social, and health services. I&R specialists are skilled professionals who assess needs and help people seeking assistance to determine their options and the best course of action. Additionally, I&R specialists are trained to determine whether a caller/visitor may be eligible for other programs, to intervene in crisis situations, and to advocate on behalf of the caller/visitor, as needed. The assistance they provide is free, fast, convenient, and courteous.
For human service planners, I&R provides an invaluable repository of current data on the needs and services of the community. Our member agencies create and maintain databases of programs and services and then disseminate that information through a variety of channels including telephone, computer and mobile devices, and in person.
ABOUT US Maryland AIRS began in Baltimore City as the Information & Referral Planning Council—a direct result of the attendance of its founding members at an institute on Cooperative Information and Referral, in January, 1978. It now includes membership throughout the State and works to develop and maintain a communication mechanism among I&R practitioners.
MISSION Maryland AIRS is a nonprofit member organization that promotes quality Information & Referral by linking members and providing them with a communication forum, education, training and networking opportunities. As the local affiliate of AIRS, we strive to ensure an effective response to the information needs of Maryland residents, and to facilitate increased, ongoing cooperation among service providers.
